What Patients Expect from the Health Care System

What is Patient- and Family- Centered Care? Are you receiving patient- and family-centered centered care? Creating partnerships for quality and safety in care (available at our PBS.org companion site):
In a workshop at The Institute for Healthcare's 17th Annual National Forum in December
2005, patients and families shared a list of what they expect from the health care system
100 percent of the time:

  1. To be listened to, taken seriously, and respected as a care partner
  2. To have my family/caregivers treated the same
  3. To participate in decision making at the level I choose
  4. To be always told the truth
  5. To have things explained to me fully and clearly
  6. To receive an explanation and apology if things go wrong
  7. To have information communicated to all my care team
  8. To have my care documented promptly and accurately
  9. To have these records made available to me if requested
  10. To have coordination among all members of the health care team
    across settings
  11. To be supported emotionally as well as physically
  12. To receive high-quality, safe care
